UPDATE DECEMBER 2020
Happy Holidays everyone!

In other news, I wrote something recently about a subject near to my heart. That subject is feline declawing and why it should be banned in the USA as it is in so many other countries in the enlightened world. I am adding it to this site in the hopes that some of you will pass the information on.
Join the Paw Project, Jackson Galaxy, and myself in fighting to ban feline declawing.
You are welcome to copy and share this article freely.

Feline Declawing: Help Ban This Barbaric Procedure Involving Multiple Amputations
Declawing is an inhumane practice that is in no way justified as a means of feline behavioral modification. My goal is to divulge the true nature of declawing, including all the side effects. Information on alternatives to declawing is included, along with information on where you can become involved in the anti-declawing movement in the United States.
Declawing is something that people do for their own convenience. Most people who do it never realize what a torturous ordeal they are putting their cat through, or that the cat may never recover fully from the physical and emotional trauma it causes.
Because of the inhumane nature of declawing, it is already banned in the following countries: England, Scotland, Wales, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Slovenia, Portugal, Belgium, Spain, Brazil, Australia, and New Zealand. I am writing this in hopes that the United States will join this list soon.
Declawing is serious surgery. A cat's claw is not a toenail like humans have. It’s actually connected to the bone. In order to remove the claw, the last bone of each claw must be amputated. That’s 10 separate, painful amputations of the third phalanx up to the last joint of each toe. Declawing is a very painful surgery, with an equally painful recovery period. What’s worse, during the recuperation from this odious surgery, the poor cat still has to use its feet to jump, climb, scratch in its litter box, and walk on toes that have just had the ends cut off.
There are those who will argue that declawing can be done in a more humane manner with laser surgery but that is not true. Pain medications are seldom used and even when they are, the fact is, there are repercussions of this practice that resonate long after the initial declawing.
Cats instinctively hide their pain as a survival mechanism. Cats are, by nature, predators, and predators who can no longer hunt, become another predator’s next meal. Cats suffer far more than they will ever let you know. The Humane Society of the United States opposes declawing except for the rare cases when it is necessary for medical purposes, such as the removal of cancerous nail bed tumors.
It is not uncommon for informed people to accept or even request declawing for their cat. I am not condemning those people. I strive instead, to educate and reach out with information to help keep cats from being unnecessarily mutilated in a "standard procedure" that often ruins a cat’s life by mutilating him. “That means 10 separate amputations for the cat’s front paws, and 18 if it’s a four-paw declaw.”
Put into human terms, the same procedure would involve cutting each of a human’s fingers off at the first joint and then making them walk on the newly amputated digits. A cat’s body is perfectly created for a feline lifestyle. The stealth and grace that is “Cat” is dependent on their unique anatomy. Their very balance depends on their toes, which they walk on, unlike us flat-footed humans.
Also, in declawing, you deprive your cat of any real defense if he should ever find himself outdoors. Yes, he still has teeth, but by the time the attacker is close enough for your cat to defend himself with his teeth, it may already be far too late for the kitty.
Complications of declawing can include excruciating pain, painful regrowth of deformed claw inside of the paw which is not visible to the eye, and chronic back and joint pain as shoulder, leg, and back muscles weaken.
During amputation of the distal phalanx, the bone may shatter and cause what is called a sequestrum, which serves as a focus for infection, causing continuous drainage from the toe. This necessitates a second anesthesia and surgery.
According to prominent veterinarian Dr. David E. Hammett, DVM, "The consequences of declawing are often pathetic. Changes in behavior can occur. A declawed cat frequently resorts to biting when confronted with even minor threats. Biting becomes an overcompensation for the insecurity of having no claws. Bungled surgery can result in the regrowth of deformed claws or in an infection leading to gangrene. Balance is affected by the inability to grasp with their claws. Chronic physical ailments such as cystitis or skin disorders can be manifestations of a declawed cat's frustration and stress." Litter box issues are often a result since litter can be very painful to the declawed cat’s paws.
The Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights (AVAR) has made the following statement: “The Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights is opposed to cosmetic surgeries and to those performed to correct ‘vices’. Declawing generally is unacceptable because the suffering and disfigurement it causes are not offset by any benefits to the cat. Declawing is done strictly to provide convenience for people. Some veterinarians have argued that some people would have their cats killed if declawing was not an option.
We should not, however, allow ourselves to taken ‘emotional hostage’ like this. If a person really would kill her or his cat in this case, it is reasonable to question the suitability of that person as a feline guardian, especially when there are millions of non-declawed cats living in harmony with people”. One might also argue that humane euthanasia, while sad, would be a better fate for the cat than the surgeries and subsequent suffering involved. As for me, I will not even take my cat to a veterinarian that offers to declaw.
Nicholas H. Dodman, prominent author, and specialist in feline pharmacology and psychology has this to say about cat declawing: “The inhumanity of the procedure is clearly demonstrated by the nature of cats' recovery from anesthesia following the surgery. Unlike routine recoveries, including recovery from neutering surgeries, which are peaceful, declawing surgery results in cats bouncing off the walls of the recovery cage because of excruciating pain. Declawing fits the dictionary definition of mutilation to a tee. Words such as deform, disfigure, disjoint, and dismember all apply to this surgery.”
Dr. Dodman further writes, “Partial digital amputation is so horrible that it has been employed for torture of prisoners of war, and in veterinary medicine, the clinical procedure serves as a model of severe pain for testing the efficacy of analgesic drugs. Even though analgesic drugs can be used postoperatively, they rarely are, and their effects are incomplete and transient anyway, so sooner or later the pain will emerge.”
So, now you know that declawing is nothing short of torture. Still, scratching damage can be a problem, so, what to do? Here are some alternatives to consider instead.
Nail trimming is a simple procedure, it just takes patience. If you’re nervous or unable to it yourself, ask your veterinarian to show you how the first time. Cats can’t create nearly as much damage with blunt nails.
Scratching posts. Scratching is recreational for cats. It’s also a way for your cat to “scent mark” his toys and territory, but scratching is a physical necessity for him to shed the outer layers of his claws. Catnip rubbed on the surface or catnip oil spray applied to the surfaces will make them very attractive to your cat.
Soft Paws nail caps are thin, vinyl nail caps that you glue on the cat's front claws. They cover the claw tip and make scratching a thing of the past. They last until your cat’s claws grow out, usually four to six weeks. Never use these on a cat that can go outdoors.
Sticky Paws is a double-sided tape that has a special adhesive that does not damage furniture but feels nasty to the cat's sensitive paws. One or two applications are enough to keep them from scratching the treated surface again.
Declawing truly is a barbaric and torturous practice. Please, never let your cat be subjected to this kind of pain. Make the humane choice.
Protect the paw, don't declaw!

Since I take great pride in being a crazy cat lady, RavenFabal.com will also feature my hand-sewn Calm Kitty cat toys, which I make using the best fresh herbs and oils as stuffing, to help scaredy cats be more calm and aggressive kitties to be less aggressive. I’ll be adding them to my Etsy store soon.
The Story of Raven Fabal
A survivor of abuse beginning in early childhood and lasting into adulthood, I freed myself in 2008 and at long last, I finally was able to stop hiding who I truly am! Now I am still battling the psychological effects of my Hitchcockian past, but many days I am happy, and now I'm on a mission to help others who have been, or are going through similar situations. I am hoping to have my book on the subject finished by 2022.
In the meantime, I continue to grow Psychically, Spiritually, and I love to help others through this work.
I am currently available for in-person Psychic Readings and consultations every Saturday at Cosmic Delights, located at 2717 East Washington Ave, Madison, Wisconsin 53704. Please check with the store for COVID-19 restrictions. I also offer many of my witch crafts for sale there, including my Magical Amulets, Spell Candles, Amazing Hand Painted Dragon Eyes, and much more! Other events will be updated on RavenFabal.com regularly.
Oh, and I almost forgot – I must add my drawings, especially my “Adventures of Ravenbird” cartoons! I’ve really been working on developing the various characters in Ravenbird’s world lately and I look forward to sharing them with you!
There will, of course, be the occasional rant, and reviews of cat products other than my own, as tested out by my kitty kids, Punkin and Murphy. So please have patience as I develop this site, and my Etsy store as well.
